Session Notes: Charles talked about the superinsulated house he built Maine. They used only 2 1/2 cords of wood per year in their woodstove to provide heating for this home. We discussed the issue of keeping fresh air in a superinsulated home and how a good heat exchanger can retain 80% of the heat while maintaining acceptable air flow.

Since single family rural homes are only one facet of housing that needs to be tackled with regard to sustainability, we brainstormed and briefly discussed some of the other issues at the intersection of housing and sustainability that included:

Affordable home heating options
Affordable home construction and rehab options
Good building practices
Healthy Buildings
Rental Properties
Temporary Housing
Community Living
Community Planning
Transportation
Allocating space for farms that grow food
Urban Housing (open windows and clanging radiators)
Seattle project doing rehab on existing buildings
